In an effort to increase pressure on the government to address record inflation, MPs from Ghana's ruling party called for the dismissal of the nation's finance minister on Tuesday.

As Ghanaians experience 37 percent inflation and the devaluation of their currency, the cedi, as a result of an economic crisis made worse by Russia's invasion of Ukraine, President Nana Akuffo-Addo has come under fire.





Ken Ofori-Atta, the finance minister, just got back from Washington, where he was negotiating with the IMF to get a $3 billion loan.

A majority of lawmakers from Mr. Akuffo-Addo's New Patriotic Party (NPP) have demanded the ouster of another finance officer in addition to Mr. Ofori-Atta.





According to the parliamentary group's spokesman, Andy Appiah-Kubi, the president must dismiss the two officials right away in order to "restore hope to the financial sector and reverse the declining trend in the growth of our economy

"We in the legislative majority group will not take part in any government activities until the aforementioned people resign or are expelled from office, Appiah-Kubi warned".

We won't be present at the budget session or take part in the debate, he declared, "if our request does not receive a favorable response."

80 of the 137 members of the NPP parliamentary caucus backed the call.

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the NPP both hold the same number of seats in Ghana's parliament. lawmakers are set to start debating the 2023 budget in November.

While opposition MPs have also called for the same motion, the majority caucus' appeal has been driving trends on social media.

The economic policies of President Nana Akufo-Addo have drawn criticism, particularly his decision to engage in negotiations with the IMF, which he previously stated would result in a "aid-free Ghana."

This choice has caused some to worry that the government will enact austerity measures that will burden the populace even more at a time when prices are already skyrocketing.
